At The Grove Studio for Natural Healing, our coaching work is built upon, and embodies, the wisdom and principles of Traditional Naturopathy.  A Traditional Naturopath does not diagnose, prescribe or treat illnesses.  We are educators, teachers - not physicians or medical doctors.  Trained and learned in - both ancient and modern, traditional and complementary, healing traditions including Herbalism, Homeopathy, Energy Work, Massage Therapy, Aromatherapy and the history of nutritional practices, the Traditional Naturopath is a resource and guide to centuries old knowledge, information and education about natural and healthy ways to bring about improved and preventative lifestyle habits, which, in turn, may result in better health and wellness promoting behaviors by the client.

Naturopathy addresses the whole person – the very real connection between The Body, The Mind and The Spirit – and, in turn, the person’s unique connection to their external environment.  As such, a Traditional Naturopath helps their client to identify, investigate and address what may be the root cause of their dis-ease, and illness, of which the symptoms may simply be offering clues.  And, rather than offering pills that suppress those symptoms, a Traditional Naturopath guides you to, and empowers you, with knowledge, which in turn, awakens you, and your confidence in your innate healing ability, that will further enable you to make important decisions concerning the your very individual health journey.

A Health Coach is a supportive mentor and wellness authority, with a strong and broad base of experience and expertise encompassing human behavior, motivation and health. Heath Coaches help their clients to gain the knowledge, skills, tools and confidence to become active participants in their own care so that they can reach their self-identified health goals.  We don't give you the fish. (Or the medicine!)  We teach you how to fish.  ("Give the Man a fish and you feed him for a day; Teach the man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.")

Health Coaches work by helping clients to identify and prioritize their health and wellness goals, and then by helping our clients to achieve those goals through the introduction of individualized food and lifestyle changes adapted to meet their very unique circumstances, needs and abilities.  We meet you where you are, offering the very helpful hand to bring you to where you would like to be.  From the beginning, the process is a collaborative, one-one-one approach, during which we serve to educate, inspire, guide, empower – and most of all support our clients an their wellness journey.

At "The Grove" our work together begins with an intensive, detailed and structured New Client Consultation.   Leaving no stone unturned, it is during this session that we learn of our client’s full health history, priorities, concerns, habits and possible obstacles to success.  Following this session is when our work together develops.  With weekly, or bi-monthly, check-in meetings during which we touch base for accountability, evaluate progress, celebrate success and modify our approach or adjust benchmarks on an individualized basis.  Our meetings are always friendly, relaxed, non-judgmental and confidential.  This is your time.  To be heard, have your concerns listened to, identify areas you may be struggling with - and to be provided with the support and encouragement that are key to your success.

AUTISM CONSULTING

In America the CDC reports that 1 out of 54 children have already been diagnosed with Autism, with boys more significantly affected than girls.  Additionally, 1 out of 6 children (17%) aged 3-17 have been diagnosed with a related developmental disability, which includes ADD/ADHD.  These numbers continue to grow, year, on year and exponentially.  This “Epidemic of Autism” takes a tremendous toll – financial, emotional and social - on not only the increasing number of children affected, but their families and communities overall.   And while Autism may be painted in friendly light on television, or in the cinema, and even by those less dramatically affected – the less romantic truth is that the mortality rates for those with autism are notably higher than the general population, and the majority of diagnosed children will become adults who remain fully dependent on their aging parents alone for lifetime support.


Once upon a time Autism was believed to be exclusively a brain, or psychological disorder – and, in fact, the behavioral criteria by which children continue to be diagnosed is sourced from the DSM V, published by the American Psychiatric Association.   And while this may be helpful in labeling the effects of Autism  - the symptoms -  it does absolutely nothing to help determine the underlying cause of these behaviors and therefore potential opportunities for treatment, and amelioration.  (Remember, the brain [behavior] and the body are connected – as you can personally observe after a few too many cocktails.)   Fortunately for both the children and their families, there has emerged a tremendous (and ever growing) amount of evidence-based and clinical research, and a body of Licensed Medical Professionals, MAPS practitioners, that support the medical treatment of Autism and related disorders.   Autism is indeed medical, oftentimes a whole-body disorder. And, as such, treatable.  Not all children will recover.  But many can enjoy a significant reduction of symptoms, and – as such – an improved quality of life.

When a child is first diagnosed with Autism it can be a tremendously frightening, stressful and isolating experience for the parents.  Devastated, panicked, eager and anxious to help their child, the parents will go online to discover pages of dissenting opinion (not all of it good) and a host of quick fixes and miracle cure promises offered at a hefty price tag, to boot.  (I certainly tried quite a few of them.)   But there is no such thing as a miracle cure and quick fix.  Each child is very different, what works for one may not work for another.  Recovery takes time.  And commitment.  And lots of work.  Much of it that will need to be done by the parents alone, which can be a daunting prospect. The very purpose of the work I do is to help you to understand your options, help you to develop that blueprint, and help guide you to the professional (and some, free) resources available to you so that you can, in turn, best help your own child effectively by laying a very solid foundation for your child’s future – all the while saving time and financial resources, both of which can quickly get out of control (the estimated cost of Autism is $60,000 per year, through childhood).  My value is the education and support that I can offer to you individually, and knowledge shared from the experiences – and plenty of mistakes! – that I’ve personally made along the way.

IRIDOLOGY

Eyes have long been referred to as the “Windows of the Soul.” But few people are aware of just how true this observation is. Accurate analysis of iris structure and pigmentation provides information about that may be difficult to assess through other methods. There are a multitude of factors that influence our health and, in turn, our behavior, and many of these factors are reflected in the iris. Look closely at your eyes in a mirror, and then at the irises of those around you. You will see many different patterns of iris fibers and colors. Like fingerprints or faces, no two are exactly alike.  


The Science of Iridology is based on the analysis of one of the most complicated tissue structures of the whole body – the iris. Iridology offers a unique perspective on the concept and practice of preventive health care. It involves a non-invasive diagnostic procedure, commonly used by the European practitioners, and may be useful in the detection of existing conditions as well as inherited genetic weaknesses. It is known that approximately 300 thousand nerves from various parts of the body make their way to the optic nerve. Therefore, a projection of systemic activity may be visible at the iris.


Iridology research began in 1670, when Dr. Philippus Meyens published a paper describing the eyes of his patients when they became sick or injured. He also noticed changes in the eye that came with healing and was able to link points on the iris to specific parts of the body. By observing the eye, he was eventually able to identify areas in the body in need of support -  which would show up in the eye long before physical symptoms would manifest.  “Modern” Iridology got its start just over 100 years ago. In the late 1800’s, a physician from Hungary and another from Sweden began observing eyes and organizing their findings. This process of observation and correlation has been slow, but it established a foundation for others to build on. The first book on Iridology in America, by an emigrated Austrian physician, was printed in 1904. This was followed by the works of N.D.s and other naturopathic oriented M.D.s. Working with limited magnification and photography equipment, progress was difficult. Then with the emergence of the AMA and other political and economic influences and the advent of “miracle” drugs, almost all natural medicine practices declined in this country. Dr. Bernard Jensen is credited with keeping Iridology alive in North America.

In Europe, a different political and economic climate created an environment which allowed Iridology (and other natural medicine practices) to evolve. Extensive research has been carried out in Europe and Iridology is now widely accepted as a valuable preventative health care approach. Currently, in the U.S., more people are showing interest in Iridology as an alternative method for improving health. Now you can experience the benefits of this remarkable assessment tool/technique.

MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

The Lymphatic System is utterly fascinating.   Running parallel to the cardio-circulatory system, it has no powerful pump of its own – and, instead, relies on the weaker pumping action of venous return, coupled by muscular movement and minor contractions – to achieve its important task of draining accumulated fluid, and metabolic and environmental waste from the body by which full body immunity, health and well-being are supported.


In a less sedentary and toxic environment the dependence on venous return and muscular movement may have once been alone sufficient.  Today, however, we find ourselves often lacking adequate intake of clean water, while sitting near motionless (save for our typing fingers) for extended periods of time, while voluntarily and involuntarily exposing ourselves to a literal soup of environmental and industrial toxins:  from the air we breathe, the water we drink and the foods that we eat.   And this toxic burden begins prior to birth, only to increase as we age.  Back in 2004, a study initiated by the Environmental Working Group in collaboration with Commonweal, found an average of 200 industrial chemical and pollutants in the umbilical chords of the babies they studied.


Typical angiomotoricity (the rate at which a lymph angion contracts) is, on average, only 10-12 pumps per minute.   This rate can be reduced by dehydration, a sedentary lifestyle, chronic illness and inflammation, physical trauma (including surgery) and even slight obesity – resulting in the accumulation and congestion of lymphatic fluid.  Manual Lymphatic Drainage can help to restore and increase both the production of waste-bearing lymph as well as the contraction of the lymph-angions to a maximum of 60 pumps per minute - thereby helping to increase the body’s capability for elimination, and all that is transported in the lymphatic load.  


Quite simply, it may be easier to imagine the inner workings of our body’s lymphatic system when sitting by the edge of stream in which little pools have developed at the edge of a riverbed, and have perhaps accumulated some twigs and branches.  Or an untreated swimming pool, in which the pump has been clogged by an accumulation of leaves, no longer working at optimal capacity.  Stagnant water, like congested lymph, becomes cloudy, discolors, quickly develops an unpleasant odor and welcomes algae and microbial growth.  Moving waters, on the other hand, remain fresh, pure, drinkable and a source of energy, health and life.

DRY CUPPING THERAPY

Cupping was established as an official therapeutic practice in the 1950s across hospitals in China after research conducted by Chinese and former Soviet Union acupuncturists confirmed cupping’s effectiveness. Prior to the 1950s, cupping had also been for centuries been practiced as an auxiliary treatment method in traditional Chinese medicine

Cupping is the term applied to a technique that uses small glass cups or bamboo jars as suction devices that are placed on the skin to disperse and break up stagnation and congestion by drawing congested blood, energy, or other humors to the surface. In dry cupping, the therapist will simply place the suction cups on the skin. In wet cupping, the practitioner will make a small incision on the skin and then apply the suction cup to draw out small amounts of blood.


There are several ways that a practitioner can create the suction in the cups. One method involves swabbing rubbing alcohol onto the bottom of the cup, then lighting it, and putting the cup immediately against the skin. Suction can also be created by placing an inverted cup over a small flame, or by using an alcohol-soaked cotton pad over an insulating material (like leather) to protect the skin, then lighting the pad and placing an empty cup over the flame to extinguish it. Flames are never used near the skin and are not lit throughout the process of cupping, but rather are a means to create the heat that causes the suction within the small cups.


Once the suction has occurred, the cups can be gently moved across the skin (often referred to as “gliding cupping). Medical massage oils are sometimes applied to improve the movement of the glass cups along the skin. The suction in the cups causes the skin and superficial muscle layer to be lightly drawn into the cup. Cupping is much like the inverse of massage – rather than applying pressure to muscles, it uses gentle pressure to pull them upward. For most clients, this is a particularly relaxing and relieving sensation. Once suctioned, the cups are generally left in place for about ten minutes while the client relaxes.

FULL BODY STRETCH

Stretching is the deliberate lengthening of muscles in order to increase flexibility in the targeted muscles and range of motion in the joints - all of which begin to diminish with age. Regular stretching can also help improve stability, balance and circulation.  Additionally frequent stretching can help to reduce stress, prevent stiffnes and help to prevent the muscles in your back from getting too tight, thus improving posture while minimizing referred discomfort in the extremities.   As a result, stretching is an important part of any exercise or rehabilitation program, no matter your age or fitness level.

The current guidance from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is that most people should perform flexibility exercises for each of the major muscle-tendon groups (shoulders, chest, neck, torso, lower back, hips, front of legs, back of legs, and ankles) at least two days a week.
