"Dietary fiber may improve the gut barrier function, modulate the intestinal microbiota, decrease systemic inflammatory response and may advance the clinical outcomes in critically ill patients."


This is interesting, too:


"In subgroup analysis, the results indicated there was a significant reduction on the duration of mechanical ventilation in fiber combined probiotic group."


In short: Dietary fiber (which comes from vegetables) improved gut health and functionality. Adding probiotics helped further.
